LANCASTER - The weather might be getting cold outside, but one business is just getting warmed up.
Extreme Creamery, located on 726 N. Memorial Drive next to Papa Johns, is set to open Saturday Nov. 16.
"We're really excited to finally be opening. We tried to earlier in the year, but a few things like construction and staffing came up that pushed it back," Jamie Moyer, one of the co-owners of Extreme Creamery, said.
He said the business won't be like other ice cream parlors around Lancaster, offering rolled ice cream and extreme milkshakes, along with other more traditional ice cream dishes.
Moyer, a co-owner of Dough-Hio Donuts, said he was inspired to start the creamery after he had seen some restaurants doing rolled ice cream in other cities.
"I want people to expand their palettes, they need to be willing to try more food, not just sticking with classics," he said. "They're going to be blown away by the milkshakes. I'd love to have us become a destination shop, where people have heard about how great these are and need to try them themselves."
There are a variety of milkshakes on the menu, including the birthday cake and the Nutella shakes. The milkshakes come with a variety of toppings. For instance, the birthday cake shake has a piece of birthday cake on it. These shakes are meant to be shared, Moyer said.
"Now, I could probably eat one all by myself, but I'm not saying everyone should do that, because there is a lot of shake there. It'd probably be best to split it between two people," he said.
The shop will make its own waffle cones and bowls, along with the batter for the rolled ice cream.
The specialty dish is prepared on a cooling table. The employees spread the batter on the table, wait for the mixture to freeze and then use scrapers to roll the ice cream, before placing it in a dish. There will be an option to add sprinkles and other toppings to the dish, Moyer said, anything to make the ice cream fun.
"It's unbelievable what you can do with ice cream, and the possibilities are almost endless," Moyer said. "We're looking for something we can call our own."
Moyer said he found inspiration by traveling around and looking to see what other cities had that Lancaster does not, then bringing that idea back to town with his own spin on it.
"I was born and raised here in Lancaster, and I wanted to see something new, something they haven't seen before," he said. "It was like that when we brought in the doughnut shop."
"We like to share new things with people who've been eating in this town, going to see get their same order every time."
Moyer said he plans on expanding the current menu, but time will tell. He's a little unsure how the community will react to the prices, but from what he's seen online with social media, he's optimistic.
"People have been very interested, and even though the opening was delayed, we're extremely excited to finally be open," he said.
