Cream's "White Room" & Glitter's "Rock and Roll, Part 2" surge in sales thanks to syncs in the new film.
Two rock hits featured in Joker reach Billboard's Hot Rock Songs chart dated Oct. 19 following the film's Oct. 4 theatrical release in the U.S.
Cream's "White Room," originally a No. 6 Billboard Hot 100 hit in 1968, debuts at No. 15, while Gary Glitter's "Rock and Roll, Part 2" (No. 7, 1972), follows at No. 16. (Older titles are allowed on Billboard's multi-metric charts, such as Hot Rock Songs, if they rank in the top half and show a meaningful reason for resurging.)
Beyond the Joker tie-in for "White Room," Cream's founding drummer, Ginger Baker, died Oct. 6 at 80 years old, also helping push sales and streams for the song and Baker's catalog as a whole. The track gained by 687% to 2,000 downloads sold and 78% to 1.5 million U.S. streams in the week ending Oct. 10, according to Nielsen Music.
Meanwhile, "Rock and Roll, Part 2" vaulted by 971% to 1.5 million streams and 800% to 2,000 sold. The song's inclusion in the film came under fire due to that fact that Glitter is currently serving a 16-year prison sentence after being found guilty of attempted rape, indecent assault and sex with a minor, and that he may profit from the song despite no longer owning its rights..
Other songs featured in Joker gained in sales and streams following the film's premiere. Frank Sinatra's "Send in the Clowns" soared by 864% to 1,000 sold and 450% to 212,000 streams and his "That's Life" bounded by 787% to 1,000 sold and 214% to 1.2 million streams.
