A Long Island ice cream shop in New York has taken down a pro-Trump banner after a standoff with local officials.
The store, Roger's Frigate, initially said it would not take the sign down after the town’s mayor told them the 3-by-20-feet sign that reads “In Trump, We Trust” violated a local code.
"We are being specifically targeted for supporting our president when we're only trying to express our love of country," store owner Roger Rutherford told the Washington Post.
"It's not necessarily what the sign says. It's basically the size and substance of the banner itself. It's an illegal sign," Village Mayor Margot Garant said to News 12 in Long Island.
“It’s not about whether you support the president or not. It’s about having a uniform look,” the mayor, a registered Republican, added. “We’re a beautiful village, and that’s the purpose of the code.”
The sign was removed on Friday, and Rutherford has not commented beyond that.
"The store agreed to take down the sign today," village clerk Barbara Sakovich confirmed Friday.
Roger's Frigate would have faced a fine of $2,000 per day if the sign remained up.
