LOGAN SQUARE — Margie’s Candies has been sweetening up report card week for decades — and this year is no exception.
Like it does every year, the beloved ice cream parlor at 1960 N. Western Ave. is giving out free ice cream cones to any student who earned an “A” on their report card. And any “C” turned into an “A” will get students a free junior banana split. The offer is to-go only.
Longtime manager Maria Gomez said Margie, the original owner, started the tradition decades ago.
Gomez said it still brings a smile to her face to see all of the kids come in, clutching their report cards. At least 20 kids came in Wednesday night, she said.
“I’m very happy because the kids are so excited. I love to see that,” Gomez said.
Peter Poulos, owner of Margie’s, previously said that Margie’s Candies initially was called First Securities Candies when it opened in 1921. The name was changed in 1933 when his father, George Poulos, became the shop’s sole owner and named it for his wife, Margie.
