Doughnuts and ice cream, in one convenient hand-held package
The downtown Berkeley ice cream shop previously occupied by Ici finally has a new tenant: Milkbomb, Potrero Hill’s audacious, exceedingly Instagram-friendly slinger of ice cream-filled doughnuts, opened over the weekend, the Daily Cal reports. On the surface, the new shop’s unorthodox twists on an ice cream sandwich seem like a big departure from Ici’s subtle, farmers’ market-oriented approach. But Milkbomb doesn’t just dabble in stunt desserts; it has a wide selection of house-made ice cream that leans toward Asian flavors (like ube and Vietnamese coffee), and, as Daily Cal reports, the owners are working on developing a Filipino-inpired ube pandesal bun.
Spain’s most celebrated — and delicious — pigs now live in California
For the first time, a commercial farm in Northern California is raising Spain’s vaunted Iberian pigs, the acorn-eating breed best known for being used to produce jamón ibérico, widely considered the best ham in the world. The Chronicle reports that a farm in Lake County has acquired 80 of the black-footed beasts and is raising this first batch not to make jamón but to sell the meat for other purposes. There’s a restaurant connection too: The farm sits on land that belongs to Marlowe pastry chef Emily Luchetti’s husband — and, naturally, she’s using her restaurant world connections to help find some customers for this rarefied pork.
Sonoma restaurants lose thousands thanks to PG&E power outage
According to a poll conducted by the Sonoma County tourist board, restaurants in the county lost an average of $4,700 during PG&E’s three-day power outage earlier this month, the Chronicle reports. Many of the restaurants also had to throw out refrigerated food that spoiled due to the outage. And the bad news might not be over yet: PG&E says there might be another power shut-off this Wednesday and Thursday.
Beast Mode eats a $1,200 burger
Marshawn Lynch, always and forever the patron saint of Oakland, was the guest star on the most recent episode of First We Feast’s Burger Show, joining host Alvin Cailan in Vegas to sample a variety of super-luxe burgers, including a $1,200 white-truffle-topped monstrosity. Naturally, Beast Mode gives a shout-out to his Emeryville restaurant Rob Ben’s, where customers might eventually see a version of the chicken wing–inspired burger the show created in his honor.
