Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams now open in the Heights - Chron.com

When Jeni Britton Bauer named her ice cream company in 2002 she did so with a big scoop of gumption. She firmly believed in the quality of her ingredient-driven ice cream and the nostalgic tenet that hand-dipped cones of frozen cream brings people together and creates, at least for a few lickable minutes, a sense of community. Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams was born.

The Columbus, Ohio-based company now has scoop shops in Nashville, Chicago, Atlanta, Charleston, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Washington, DC, Charlotte and Austin. And today, Bauer opens her first in Houston, a folksy shop in the heart of the Heights at 375 W. 19th. The company will mark the grand opening at 7 p.m. on Jan. 9 with free ice cream through 11 p.m. and a swag bag to the first 50 people in line (you can RSVP to the event on Facebook here).

While the Jeni’s brand is already available at retail at Whole Foods and Central Market stores, the ice cream parlor is a splendid stamp that Houston is firmly in the Jeni’s camp when it comes to quality, high-end ice cream.

Jeni’s ice creams, for those who are not familiar, are made on a dairy in Ohio without stabilizers, emulsifiers, synthetic flavors or dyes. The egg-free ice cream base is made with milk proteins which produce a creamy texture and foundation for unique flavors to “bloom as you eat it,” Bauer said. Her flavors are evocative: brandied banana crème  brulee, lemon and blueberries parfait, goat cheese with red cherries, sweet cream biscuits and peach, Boston Cream Pie, brown butter almond brittle, brambleberry crisp, cognac with gingerbread, and sweet potato with torched marshmallow. Other flavors include salted peanut butter with chocolate, salty caramel, fluffernutter pie, frose sorbet, coffee with cream and sugar, green mint chip, strawberry buttermilk, gooey butter cake, roasted peanut butter and chocolate, and pistachio and honey.

There are even flavors on the Jeni’s roster that go straight to the heart of Texans: whiskey and pecans, Texas Sheet Cake, and churros. Bauer said she has developed a new flavor specifically with Texas in mind, banana pudding, which should be coming to Houston soon.

The scoop shop does not offer novelties or ice cream sundaes and milkshakes. Just scoops, available in a cup or cone. The company uses only compostable bowls, spoons and napkins and strives to have 95 percent of what customers buy in its stores as reusable, recyclable or compostable.

Bauer, who will be at the Heights store grand opening, said she is excited to bring her scoop shop to Houston where her deep belief in customer service merges well with the Texas tradition of Southern hospitality.

“Hospitality is a real thing. It fuels everything we do from how we buy our products to how we build our teams,” said Bauer, a James Beard Award-winning cookbook author. “We like neighborhoods where we can feel a part of the community.”

To that end, the spiffy scoop shop includes a community table among its seating options of marble tabletops and orange metal chairs set throughout the honeycomb-tiled space. “We want to create a hangout – another opportunity to get to know someone better,” she said. “Ice cream in the moment.”

Bauer said that she has been interested in the Houston market since her friend, Houston native and Atlanta-based restaurateur Ford Fry opened La Lucha and Superica in the Heights in 2018.

“He was the first person to tell me I needed to come to Houston,” she said.

And now she has.

Jeni’s Spendid Ice Creams, 375 W. 19th St., 346-335-1394; jenis.com/houston-heights; will be open daily at noon until 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
