Ice cream maker opening in Lakewood Ranch, but not UTC - Sarasota Herald-Tribune

Lackey’s Artisan Ice Cream is opening its flagship store and production facility.

An ice cream shop that was once listed as coming soon to University Town Center plans to open a production facility in Lakewood Ranch.

Lackey’s Artisan Ice Cream is opening at 4122 Lakewood Ranch Blvd., between 44th Avenue East and State Road 64 in Lakewood Ranch, according to a commercial building permit application filed Jan. 2 with Manatee County.

According to Lackey’s Facebook page, Lakewood Ranch will be its flagship store and production facility.

The company was supposed to open a shop in Sarasota-Manatee’s University Town Center district at I-75 and University Parkway. UTC developer Benderson Development Co. even went so far as to put up a “coming soon” sign for the ice cream shop in a storefront window.

But Julie Fanning, senior marketing manager for Benderson, said Wednesday that Lackey’s won’t be coming to UTC after all.

“We were in discussions with Lackey’s, but no deal was made,” Fanning wrote in an email. She did not respond to a message asking for further details, and an email to the ice cream shop was not immediately returned Wednesday.

Lackey’s makes its product from scratch in Bradenton. Its classic ice creams are made with fresh milk and cream, organic cane sugar and egg yolks, and its vegan concoctions are made with organic coconut cream, organic extra virgin coconut oil, organic cane sugar, cocoa butter, housemade cashew milk and organic carob bean, according to the company’s Facebook page.

The idea behind Lackey’s was to bring back the classic American ice cream truck and the art of traditional ice cream making using natural ingredients. Flavors include Sicilian pistachio, candied ginger, earl grey tea, salted caramel, peanut butter marshmallow crunch, strawberry and honeycomb, according to Lackey’s website.

“Each of our flavors is a coronation of the world’s best artisan producers and farmers locally and all around the world,” the company’s Facebook page reads.
