A West Michigan ice cream maker will produce recipes on behalf of another ice cream business in the region next summer.
Holland-based Hudsonville Ice Cream said it will bring to life historic recipes from South Haven-based Sherman’s Ice Cream in Hudsonville’s production plant for the 2020 season.
In 2019, Sherman’s Dairy Bar in South Haven remained open while production of its ice cream ceased in conjunction with the retirement of Bob Eisenman, owner of Sherman’s Ice Cream from 1989-2019.
“Sherman’s has built a notable reputation for its old-fashioned ice cream, creating flavors that have become a staple part of summer in our region, and we wanted to make sure fans of this brand continue to enjoy their favorite flavors next summer,” said CJ Ellens, part owner of Hudsonville Ice Cream.
Eisenman said Sherman’s has “a rich family heritage with a strong local loyalty, much like Hudsonville,” and the company is “happy to partner with (Hudsonville) to continue that legacy.”
“Being part of Sherman’s for so many years has been such a meaningful experience for me, and I am retiring with fond memories of the many people who are part of the fabric of Sherman’s and will be moving forward — our employees, our supporters and people from near and far who (visit Sherman’s).”
Sherman’s Ice Cream
Founded as a dairy in 1916, Sherman’s shifted its focus to producing ice cream in the 1950s, bringing its founder Port Sherman’s vision to life.
The brand produced traditional favorites and created custom flavors over the years, such as grasshopper, chocolate malt supreme and cappuccino.
Sherman’s retail location in South Haven opened in 1958, when cones were sold for 5 cents.
The shop is open from March through October, with Sherman’s flavors becoming available again in March.
Hudsonville Ice Cream
With roots dating to 1926, Hudsonville Creamery & Ice Cream Company, dba Hudsonville Ice Cream, is a family-owned and -operated ice cream maker that distributes its flavors to retailers in more than a dozen states.
