Bliss Artisan Ice Cream and Cafe heading for first Evansville location - Courier & Press

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Evansville will soon have its first Bliss Artisan Ice Cream and Café.

Bliss Artisan is a local company that started in New Harmony by Mike and Angie Woodburn in 2013. The shop moved to Mount Vernon, Indiana, and then expanded to Henderson, New Albany and Tell City, where the Woodburns have created a larger production facility. Bliss sends ice cream to a slew of retail operations in Indiana, Kentucky and Illinois.

The name of the newest cafe will be Bliss on 6th, and it will be located in the former Keylee’s Pizza and Creamery location at 10 NW Sixth Street. Keylee's has always carried Bliss ice cream.

The target opening date is Tuesday.

In the past, Bliss owner Mike Woodburn said his business would not locate in a town the size of Evansville, preferring to stay in smaller locations. But never say never.

When Keylee’s, where owner Kerry Draper retailed Bliss Artisan ice cream, recently closed, Woodburn said “yes” to Downtown Evansville.

“It is a fantastic location,” he said. “I had told Kerry before that if he ever decided to give the spot up, I’d like to have first dibs on it. It’s close to events; it’s close to Signature School, and with all the people that work downtown Monday through Friday there’s so much foot traffic.”

The Woodburns decided to call the new café Bliss on 6th rather than Bliss Artisan like their other shops to denote it’s a little different.

While pizza will be offered in the same fast-casual, build-your-own format, space restraints and the necessity of offering a super-quick lunch to students and downtown workers meant that mixers and dough sheeters wouldn’t work at this location. Instead, the Woodwards found a high-quality par-baked crust they love that will have pizza ready to go in a jiffy.

Custom salads and warm grilled wraps are on the menu, and three of the toasted pizza-oven sandwich favorites from Keylee’s will remain: the hot ham and cheese, a grilled chicken and cheese and an Italian sub with sausage and pepperoni. All will be on chewy-soft Amaroso Bakery bread from Philidelphia.

A dozen flavors of Bliss Artisan Ice Cream will be in the case at all times, rotating from a bank of 51 flavors.

Delivery will be available through Uber eats and door dash.
