What's better than ice cream? Free ice cream.
Häagen-Dazs, one of the most recognizable ice cream chains in the country, is expanding its footprint with five new shops in metro Phoenix.
The grand openings are set for Saturday, Dec. 14, in various shopping centers across the Valley. All locations will carry the full Häagen-Dazs menu, including its variety of sorbets, sundaes and holiday flavors.
The popular ice cream company saw potential growth in Arizona because of its "great year-round weather and loyal customer base," Laura Benvenuto, a spokesperson for Häagen-Dazs, said in an email.

The new Häagen-Dazs locations will be located at:
- Arizona Mills Mall in Tempe.
- Arrowhead Towne Center in Glendale.
- Chandler Fashion Center.
- Old Town Scottsdale at 4020 N. Scottsdale Road.
- San Tan Village in Gilbert.
The grand opening at all locations is scheduled to take place from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., according to a press release.
All locations will offer a free scoop to the first 500 guests. The shops will also offer other rewards, including scratch-off cards with the chance to win free ice cream for a year, a $500 value according to the company.
What is Häagen-Dazs?
Häagen-Dazs, which is licensed to Nestlé in the U.S., started as a family-owned business in Brooklyn, New York. It began in the early 1960s with just three flavors: chocolate, vanilla and coffee.
One of the Häagen-Dazs founders Reuben Mattus said he wanted a "foreign sounding name" for the brand, Reader's Digest reported. He and his wife Rose, both Jews of Polish descent, made up the name Häagen-Dazs because it sounded Danish — a tribute to Jewish lives Denmark saved during World War II.
Häagen-Dazs has since grown into one of the most famous ice cream brands in the world, with products including bars, pints and cookie squares. The company is known for a wide selection of flavors and seasonal themes including Peppermint Bark, a white chocolate ice cream with crispy dark chocolate and peppermint candy.
