Palau is first country to ban 'reef toxic' sun cream - BBC News

The Pacific nation of Palau has become the first country to ban sun cream that is harmful to corals and sea life.

From Wednesday, sun cream that includes common ingredients, including oxybenzone, is not allowed to be worn or sold in the country.

Palau's President Tommy Remengesau said: "We have to live and respect the environment because the environment is the nest of life."

The island nation markets itself as a "pristine paradise" for divers.

A lagoon in Palau's Rock Islands is a Unesco World Heritage site. The country has a population of around 20,000 dotted across hundreds of islands.

The ban - which was announced in 2018 - prohibits sun cream containing any of 10 ingredients. The list includes oxybenzone and octinoxate, which absorb ultraviolet light.

The International Coral Reef Foundation said the banned chemicals were "known environmental pollutants - most of them are... incredibly toxic to juvenile stages of many wildlife species".

Mr Remengesau told the AFP news agency: "When science tells us that a practice is damaging to coral reefs, to fish populations, or to the ocean itself, our people take note and our visitors do too.

"Toxic sunscreen chemicals have been found throughout Palau's critical habitats, and in the tissues of our most famous creatures.

"We don't mind being the first nation to ban these chemicals, and we will do our part to spread the word."

The number of sun creams containing the harmful chemicals is declining. In 2018, experts said it was found in about half of creams and lotions.

When the US state of Hawaii announced a similar ban - which comes into effect in 2021 - major brands were quick to say their products were "reef bill compliant".

Other places to announce bans include the US Virgin Islands - where the law takes effect in March - and the Dutch Caribbean island of Bonaire.

Boozy Ice Cream: A Cocktail Trend That Isn’t Going Away - Forbes

Tracy Beckerman: The cream of the crop - Penn Yan Chronicle-Express

“Oh no!” I cried from the bathroom.

“Honey, what’s wrong? Are you okay?” My husband ran into the room, wondering, I’m sure, what kind of tragedy could have transpired with only me, the sink and the toilet in the room.

“I’ve made a terrible mistake,” I said, looking at him forlornly.

“What?” he asked.

“I used my night cream instead of my day cream and it’s daytime.”

He stared at me blankly.

“What do you think is going to happen?” I asked him.

“I guess your face is going to fall asleep,” he replied and left the room.

I knew my husband thought it was ridiculous that one person needed so many creams. I have my day cream and my night cream which is heavier than my day cream because apparently one needs more moisture on their face when they sleep. I have night eye cream and day eye cream for the same reason. These are for the fine lines under my eyes which, apparently, are not moisturized enough by the other creams I just put on my face. I have something called a retinol which I’m told is necessary because I’m in my 50’s and the retinol helps speed up the regeneration of my skin cells which must be dying off at the same rate as the aged eggs in my ovaries.

Then I have a neck cream for the delicate neck area which feels suspiciously like the day and night creams I already use. I’ve been told, though, that the neck creams have different anti-aging and tightening properties, which, it would seem, could easily and less expensively be handled by wearing a turtleneck instead. Then there are the moisturizers with sunscreen built in, the primers with sunscreen built in, and the really expensive, really tiny jar of special cream that smells like seaweed because it’s made of seaweed and has extra special firming properties which I have no idea if they work because, honestly, who wants their face to smell like fish.

When I was in college, I was a moisturizer virgin and really had no idea what, if any, lotions or creams I needed to maintain my perfect 20-year-old skin. My roommate routinely slathered Noxema on her face every night which quite possibly smelled worse than the seaweed cream they make today. I haven’t seen her in 30 years so I can’t tell you if the stuff worked, although I assume that the smell of the Noxema was so offensive it’s possible that the odor alone would have caused any aging skin cells she might have had to jump ship.

Naturally, I’ve tried to cut down on the number of creams I use mainly because they’re costly and they take up a lot of room in my medicine chest and, I have to explain this whole thing all over again to the TSA agents every time I travel and they wonder why I have so many creams and lotions for one person who has only one face and is only going away for three-day trip. But when I explain that the lotions have multiple uses and can also be used as bug repellant, motor oil, and hoof and mane cream for horses, I usually sail right through.

Knowing that all of this was pretty ludicrous, I decided it probably made sense to try to pair down all the creams to what was absolutely necessary.

I was about to do this when I realized that the night cream had just kicked in and I had to take a nap because my face had fallen asleep.

Some Fatburger Locations Serve Non-Vegan Whipped Cream Atop “Vegan” Milkshakes - VegNews

VegNews has recently learned that at least two locations of Fatburger in the Los Angeles, CA area (West Hollywood and Beverly Hills) are serving lactose-free—but not vegan—Reddi-Wip on top of its otherwise vegan milkshakes. In October, Fatburger tested vanilla and strawberry vegan milkshakes (made with Craig’s Vegan Ice Cream) at 12 locations in Southern California before expanding the options to 50 additional locations in Southern California and Las Vegas, NV in mid-December. Last week, VegNews discovered that the West Hollywood location only offers lactose-free Reddi-Wip (which is not vegan as it contains cows’ milk), even though the milkshake is advertised on store windows as “vegan”—the photo depicting a swirl of the supposedly vegan whip. A spokesperson for Fatburger parent company FAT Brands explained that while the test locations used the non-vegan, lactose-free Reddi-Wip, the larger rollout would replace it with coconut-based vegan Reddi-Wip for a fully vegan milkshake option. The spokesperson assured VegNews that the issue is isolated to one location and will be remedied as the store transitions to the new vegan whipped cream. However, VegNews visited the store in question this weekend to find that it still only serves the non-vegan whipped cream. VegNews then visited the Beverly Hills location where an employee revealed that while they did serve the coconut-based whipped cream at that location, they intended to replace it with the non-vegan version once they run out of stock, adding that corporate headquarters sent them (and other stores) the non-vegan whipped cream to use. VegNews is working with FAT Brands to resolve this issue and advises those looking for a fully vegan, whipped cream-topped milkshake to ask employees which whipped cream they offer prior to purchase.

This Edy’s ‘Touchdown’ Ice Cream Is Full Of Football-Shaped Fudge And Caramel - Delish.com

Super Bowl snacks tend to focus on the savory side: dips, cheese and meats, pizza, and enough crunchy stuff to help get you through three-plus hours of intense game time. And while that’s great and all, Edy’s just came out with a sweet treat that’ll instantly make you the most popular guest at the Super Bowl party.

The football-themed ice cream was spotted by Instagram account @dadbodsnacks, and it’s got a little something for every Super Bowl fan in it. It’s called the Touchdown Sundae, and it features vanilla ice cream, fudge swirls, and little chocolate footballs that are filled with caramel. BTW: Edy’s didn’t phone it in on the footballs—they actually look like little pigskins, with marks for the laces and all.

Apparently this stuff tastes as good as it looks, because @dadbodsnacks hashtagged #mmm and #tasty in the post. (Can't find it in your area? Turkey Hill also sells a Touchdown Sundae with peanut butter-infused footballs.)

No word on where you can find this sweet treat or how long it’ll be in stores, but Edy’s did point out on their Instagram that it’s a limited-edition situation.

You know what that means. Make room in your freezer now! If you happen to spot this out the wild, you’ll want to grab a quart—or five—to last you ‘til the Super Bowl. Go team!

We all scream for Ice Cream! Museum of Ice Cream opens permanent location in New York City - KGO-TV

SOHO, New York City -- The Museum of Ice Cream NYC is like a dream come true for ice cream lovers! An imaginative experience bringing ice cream to life, the new permanent location of the Museum of Ice Cream NYC brings even more fun!
"It's been three years in the making. We built our first pop-up in 2016," said Mary Ellis Bunn, Founder of the Museum of Ice Cream. "When we left we had 2,000 people on our waitlist and I said - my god - we have to come back here and build something for the world!"

"The Pint Shop" was the temporary pop-up that consisted of one main room with a few installations inside.

The Museum of Ice Cream NYC is completely different - it features 13 never-before-seen installations and some of the most imaginative multi-sensory experiums to date. The new location will be permanent, they signed a 10-year lease in Soho and it's over 25,000 square feet with 3 floors.

Inside guests can find a 3-story slide, New York-inspired "Celestial Subway", giant hall of scoops, "Queen Beehive", and the biggest sprinkle pool to date! Additionally, they'll have a publicly accessible retail shop and cafe.

Eyewitness News' Amy Freeze got the full scoop at the Press Event ahead of the Grand Opening. "It is so magical - this place is like a dream!" said Freeze. "There are sprinkles everywhere!"

The Museum of Ice Cream NYC has started the experiential trend with dozens of copycats following suit. They've seen 1.6 million guests to date, across all 5 locations, and have plans to build more locations internationally and domestically in the next year.

"We wanted to build something responsive for the locals who are coming to visit and bringing all the little, different elements of the places into our experience," said Bunn. "An idea mixed with an idea of the imagination by putting it together, it can make these things that seem impossible truly come to life."

From a room full of bananas to stretchy ice cream, the Museum of Ice Cream NYC has something for everyone!

Sol-Gel acne cream reduces marks in late-stage studies, shares soar - Reuters

(Reuters) - Sol-Gel Technologies Ltd’s shares more than tripled in value on Monday after the company said its lead acne drug candidate, Twyneo, met the main goal of reducing marks in two late-stage studies.

Twyneo is a once-daily topical non-antibiotic cream containing a fixed-dose combination of encapsulated benzoyl peroxide and tretinoin.

The late-stage studies evaluated Twyneo in 858 patients aged nine and above with moderate to severe acne when applied once daily for 12 weeks. Neither studies reported drug-related serious adverse events.

Acne is a common skin disease that affects about 40 million to 50 million people in the United States, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

Benzoyl peroxide and tretinoin have been widely used separately historically to treat acne. Twyneo is the first such drug to combine the two components in the topical cream.

Sol-Gel said it expects to submit a marketing application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in the second half of 2020 and make Twyneo available to physicians and patients in the second half of 2021.

The company’s shares jumped to $29.99 before the opening bell.

Northern California woman permanently injured from tainted skin-lightening cream - KGO-TV

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- A Sacramento woman suffers permanent injuries and is unable to speak or care for herself after using a skin-lightening cream.

The 47-year-old has the first case of mercury poisoning in the U.S. that's linked to a skin cream, according to a report released in late December from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

In July, the woman visited the doctor for an odd pricking sensation and arm weakness, and two weeks later, she returned with blurry vision and slurred speech.

Doctors at UCSF treated her for abnormally high levels of methylmercury, a form of organic mercury, which is highly toxic and can cause permanent nervous system damage.

RELATED: Tainted face cream with dangerous levels of mercury leaves California woman in semi-comatose state

Her family told doctors that she used a skin-lightening cream from Mexico twice daily, for the past seven years.

The cream, Pond's Rejuveness was purchased through her friends to erase blemishes and wrinkles, but it was tainted with methylmercury after its manufacturing.

Officials tested the cream and found that it contained 12,000 parts per million of methylmercury, an illegal amount to be sold in the States.

The Center is working to warn the public of this health risk and actively screening other skin lightening cream samples for mercury.

From licking ice cream to storming Area 51, these 8 stories made 2019 a wild year - CNN

But that's 2019 for ya...
In addition to the serious stories that broke this year, a bunch of weird ones popped up, too.
Here's a look at some that made us facepalm, laugh hysterically and question humanity:

The guy who survived on taco sauce packets 🌮

The Toyota 4Runner Jeremy Taylor was stuck in for 5 days.
An Oregon man's trip to the gas station turned into a near-death experience when his car got stuck in the snow for five days in February.
Jeremy R. Taylor initially tried to escape, but found the snow too deep to walk through. He returned to his car and waited for help.
After nearly a week, he was discovered by a passerby and dug out by first responders.
When authorities asked how he survived the ordeal, he said he periodically turned on the vehicle for heat and ate taco sauce packets for sustenance.

That exotic bird that was covered in curry 🐤

A seagull covered in curry was rescued by an animal hospital.
Residents in Buckinghamshire, England, called a nearby animal hospital in July to report a beautiful orange bird on the side of a highway.
The bird looked exotic, perhaps even other worldly. (We think it looks like a real-life Pokemon Moltres.)
Sadly, that wasn't the case. Turns out it was just a seagull covered in Vindaloo curry.
Rescuers gave him a bath, returning him to his ordinary white coat of feather and set him free.

The lady who went around licking ice cream 👅 🍦

Offsett and Cardi B were right, people will do anything for clout.
In June, a woman walked into a Walmart, opened a tub of Blue Bell Tin Roof ice cream and licked it before putting it back on the shelf.
The icky act sparked the #IceCreamChallenge, in which others also licked unsold ice cream and posted video proof on social media.
Health officials warned of the hazards and police threatened arrest. Thankfully, the trend quickly died.

Those people who pledged to storm Area 51 👽

A warning sign posted outside of the Area 51 facility.
Matty Roberts was just kidding when he created a Facebook event called "Storm Area 51, They Can't Stop All of Us."
But the event quickly went viral, with more than 2 million people saying they're attending and another 1.5 million interested in the September event.
For weeks, authorities warned that storming a secret government compound could be dangerous. Meanwhile, experts answered questions about what people would likely find inside Area 51 if they were to breech its security.
In the end, the event transformed into a music festival called AlienStock. Other alien-themed gatherings were also held nearby. However, very few enthusiasts showed up and no one stormed the compound, though there were a few arrests.

That lady who swallowed her engagement ring 💍

A San Diego woman ended up in urgent care in September with a story that was almost too crazy to believe.
Jenna Evans claimed to have swallowed her engagement dream while having a bad dream about "a very sketchy situation involving a high speed train and bad guys,"
In Evans' dream, her fiance Bobby Howell told her to swallow her ring to protect it. "So I popped that sucker off, put it in my mouth and swallowed it with a glass of water," she said.
The next morning, she awoke to find her engagement ring missing. She and Howell then drove to urgent care, where an Xray revealed the ring in her stomach. Fortunately, doctors were able to find and remove it through an endoscopy.

The man whose body brews beer 🍺

When a man in North Carolina was pulled over on suspicion of driving drunk, police didn't believe him when he claimed to not have had a single drink.
Results from a blood test showed his blood alcohol level was 0.2%, about 2.5 times the legal limit and the equivalent of consuming 10 drinks an hour.
But researchers at the Richmond University Medical Center in New York proved the man's claims to be true.
They diagnosed him with auto-brewery syndrome (ABS), also known as gut fermentation syndrome. in other words, the man's body was brewing its own beer.

The thieves who stole a golden toilet 🚽

Thieves targeted an English palace in September, making off with a solid gold toilet valued at $6 million.
The fully functional work of art on display at Blenheim Palace, former UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill's Oxfordshire home.
The palace's insurance company offered a $124,000 reward in hopes of flushing out the thieves. However, the investigation is still pending.
In a direct plea to the thieves, Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan said: "Dear thieves, please, if you are reading this, let me know how much you like the piece and how it feels to pee on gold."

The man sentenced to jail for missing jury duty ⚖️

A Florida man selected to serve on a civil jury was sentenced to 10 days in jail after oversleeping and missing the trial date.
Deandre Somerville, 21, was summoned for a court hearing in September, where a judge questioned his absence. "I just said, 'Sir, honestly I overslept, and I didn't understand the seriousness of this.'" Somerville said.
The judge sentenced Somerville to 10 days in jail, 150 hours of community service, a written apology of at least 100 words, a year of probation and $233 in fees, according to court records.
Somerville appealed the sentence after spending 10 days in jail. The judge initially reduced his sentence, then later vacated it entirely.

Plant-based, vegan, and lactose intolerant Disney fans, you’re in for a real sweet treat…a non-dairy sweet treat, that is! The artistic and unique ice cream shop Salt & Straw is bringing vegan dessert to Downtown Disney, and we’re so excited to try it!

Disney has been adding more and more vegan food offerings, and it seems like now we can add an ice cream shop at Downtown Disney to the list of food locations with plenty of vegan options in the original Magic Kingdom. You can now find vegetarian and vegan food items all throughout Disneyland and Walt Disney World property, and we’re so happy that Sal & Straw is continuing to expand its vegan dessert offerings with entirely new flavors.

Salt & Straw just announced that they are bringing vegan ice cream flavors to Anaheim and their other locations as part of the shop’s monthly series. This means that every month there will be a new vegan flavor to try at not only the Downtown Disney location but also other Salt & Straw locations across California and the U.S. Here’s all the info about the Salt & Straw Vegandulgence Series coming in 2020:

Gone are the days when vegan implies a sacrifice. Every January we proclaim the virtues of nature by developing incredibly indulgent, creamy, extravagant ice creams that are totally dairy-free. That’s what Vegandulgence® means to us: 100% plant-based, 100% decadent. This isn’t just dairy-free ice cream—this is something you’ve never experienced before.

Here are the three vegan ice cream flavors you can try at Downtown Disney’s Salt & Straw location beginning this January. Keep in mind that, like with other Salt & Straw flavors that aren’t permanent, these are introduced seasonally, so hopefully we can expect even more new vegan ice cream flavors later in the year.

And you’re probably going to want to buy a pint or two.

10 Best Foot Creams for Dry Feet and Cracked Heels 2020 - GoodHousekeeping.com

GHI Best Foot Creams

courtesy of brands

Your feet carry your entire body around all day, every day, which can take a huge toll on them. Whether you're walking around in cramped shoes, sandals that expose your skin, or (ouch!) barefoot, one of the results is skin dryness and even cracking and calluses, especially in the heel area where dead skin cells tend to build up.

Since the skin on the feet is thicker than that on other areas of the body, you'll need a specialized foot cream to soften and heal cracked heels and very dry, hard patches. Foot creams are made with heavier, richer textures than face creams or body lotions, and they also boast exfoliating ingredients that help slough away tough dry patches, explains Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab senior chemist Sabina Wizemann.

To silken rough feet quickly, slather on a thick layer of foot cream at night before bed, then slip on a pair of socks to seal in the moisture overnight and smooth skin as you sleep. These are the best foot creams and treatments to soften very dry, cracked feet, according to GH Beauty Lab experts and reviewers:

Best Foot Cream for Hard, Dry Skin

Coconut Foot Cream
Burt's Bees walmart.com

$8.22

This heavy-duty Burt's Bees foot salve, a GH beauty editor favorite for over a decade, is based on a plethora of nourishing botanical oils including olive, coconut, oat, and soybean for deep nourishment. It immediately softens tough skin and dry patches when massaged into skin or worn with socks. Even better? The balm smells like warm, sweet coconut — an escape for worn-out feet (and senses).

2

Best Value Foot Cream

Shea Enriched Foot Cream
Dr Teal's walmart.com

$3.97

At under $4, this Dr. Teal's foot cream is loaded with high-quality hydrating ingredients like skin-repairing fatty acids and softening shea butter. And it really works: "My husband uses this cream for his diabetic feet," a reviewer said. "I buy two at a time — it works on his dry, cracked, and painful skin."

3

Best Foot Cream for Cracked Heels

Healthy Feet Foot Cream
O'Keeffe's amazon.com

$7.29

Small pot, big benefits: This O'Keeffe's formula, packed with skin-replenishing fatty acids and conditioning paraffin, is the top-rated foot cream on Amazon. It's racked up over 11,000 reviews, including insane photos of users' heels before and after treatment with the cream. "My feet have been cracked non-stop for probably the last 10 years— I've tried literally everything and was incredibly embarrassed by them," one reviewer reported. "After 4+ weeks my feet have never been better...there are zero cracks."

4

Best Exfoliating Foot Cream

Heels & Feet Moisturizer Plus Gentle Exfoliator
Arm & Hammer amazon.com

$9.87

A novel moisturizer plus exfoliator hybrid, Arm & Hammer's formula gets rid of rough, flaky foot skin with glycolic acid to help turn over dead skin cells and a hands-free massaging brush applicator to further smooth. "The little soft scrubbing nubs help get the cream into any cracks around your heel and feel great," one Amazon reviewer said.

5

Best Foot Cream for Tired, Aching Feet

Foot Relief Foot Cream
Aveda nordstrom.com

$24.00

Take a load off fatigued feet thanks to Aveda's cream, which refreshes with cooling menthol and mint, plus a laundry list of other plant oils and extracts (castor, jojoba, rosemary, lavender, sunflower, tea tree, apple, green tea, willow bark, orange, and more!). It's top-rated at Nordstrom with almost 1,000 reviews for a reason: "I can’t say how much I love this foot cream!" one reviewer enthused. "It literally feels like my feet can breathe after using it! You really can tell a difference in just one use. My feet feel spa fresh."

6

Best Foot Cream Booties

Barefoot Scientist amazon.com

$22.00

These supersoft socks are infused with a gel that releases skin nourishers like shea butter and vitamin E as you wear them for up to 12 uses. Slip the socks on before bed or wear them around the house for a mini foot treatment as you work or lounge! "I love that these allow you to soften and treat your feet without any mess or extra steps in your routine," GH's beauty editor says. They can be hand-washed and air-dried as needed, too

$5.00

Like a sheet mask for your feet, Sephora's disposable single-use paper booties are infused with moisturizers like glycerin, safflower oil, and fatty acids, making them a top-seller on the brand's site and a great way to revive the look and feel of your feet in between or in place of a pedicure. "This saves my skin from feeling dry and itchy and works wonders on my feet and elbows, but I have known to apply it anywhere my skin feels dry — my face included," she says.  "It smells incredible: energizing yet relaxing at the same time."

10

Best Soothing Foot Cream

Dead Sea Mineral Foot Creams
AHAVA amazon.com

$32.00

Made with calming aloe, cooling menthol, antibacterial tea tree oil, and exfoliating salicylic acid, Ahava's foot cream, a best-seller at Ulta, is like a spa treatment for your feet. Two reviewers called it the best foot cream they've ever used. "We have hard water, hence very dry and cracked feet," one raved. It "smooths the skin so they feel like a baby's."
