LSU-Alabama will start to separate the cream of the crop (Nate Mink’s AP top 25) - syracuse.com

Syracuse, N.Y. -- LSU and Alabama will meet in the first Associated Press No. 1 vs. No. 2 regular-season matchup since the two schools did so in 2011.

With it comes the first head-to-head data point that will start to sort out the cream of the crop in college football.

Ohio State likely won’t be challenged until Penn State visits Nov. 23.

Clemson, weighed down by a weak ACC, won’t get a real measuring stick unless it reaches the College Football Playoff unbeaten.

Georgia and Penn State, sitting outside the top 4, have strong wins on their resumes but will ultimately be judged by whether it can win their conference.

With all eyes on Tuscaloosa, Ala., this weekend, beat writer Nate Mink shares his AP ballot.

1. Clemson (9-0)

2. Louisiana State (8-0)

3. Ohio State (8-0)

4. Alabama (8-0)

5. Penn State (8-0)

6. Georgia (7-1)

7. Florida (7-2)

8. Oklahoma (7-1)

9. Auburn (7-2)

10. Oregon (8-1)

11. Utah (8-1)

12. Baylor (8-0)

13. Wisconsin (6-2)

14. Michigan (7-2)

15. Notre Dame (6-2)

16. Memphis (8-1)

17. Cincinnati (7-1)

18. Minnesota (8-0)

19. Kansas State (6-2)

20. Southern Methodist (8-1)

21. Wake Forest (7-1)

22. Iowa (6-2)

23. Boise State (7-1)

24. Texas (5-3)

25. Indiana (7-2)

The American champion deserves the New Year’s Six bid

Appalachian State’s loss to Georgia Southern effectively ended the Sun Belt’s shot at a major bowl.

The American Athletic Conference has four teams ranked in the AP poll -- more than the ACC, Big 12, Pac-12 and just one less than the SEC.

Cincinnati is the highest-ranked of the bunch at No. 17, and its regular-season finale with Memphis may simply be Round 1 before a rematch in the AAC championship.

That game should determine who gets the Group of Five’s automatic New Year’s Six bowl bid.

Indiana on the cusp of history

The Hoosiers haven’t been ranked since 1994.

Is this the year?

Indiana, which is off this week, may need some help at the bottom of the poll.

It’s the third team in the receiving votes pecking order, behind Central Florida and Texas.

Texas hosts No. 20 Kansas State. UCF is at 2-7 Tulsa.

A Virginia Tech win against Wake Forest is another result that could elevate Indiana onto the ballot.

Or, Indiana can handle its own business and knock off Penn State in two weeks.
