Little Baby’s Ice Cream Is Going Out of Business - Eater Philly

Little Baby’s Ice Cream, the Philly chain that first opened in East Kensington in 2012, is closing all of its locations for good on Wednesday, November 27, announcing today on Instagram that the “era of Little Baby’s Ice Cream has come and gone.”

Cofounders Pete Angevine and Martin Brown started Little Baby’s as a roving cart before opening on Frankford Avenue in a space shared with Pizza Brain and putting out into the world a very weird commercial featuring an ice cream person eating itself.

The mini-chain, which has scoop shops in Philly and one in Baltimore and also sells its pints at Whole Foods, quickly became known for its unusual flavor combinations, like balsamic banana, apple pie and cheddar cheese, honey pistachio, and pepper lavender. Several of the flavors are named after Philly icons, like the Gritty with turmeric, beet powder, brûléed sugar, and crushed chocolate cookies.

Little Baby’s also makes coconut-based non-dairy ice cream and more recently embraced the CBD trend with CBD-infused ice cream and ice cream bars.

The newest location, inside the Franklin’s Table food hall on the University of Pennsylvania campus, closed last spring. Today, Little Baby’s announced the impending closure of the other locations with this message on Instagram:

To the People of Planet Earth,

The era of Little Baby’s Ice Cream has come and gone. While our physical manifestation will be no more for this world, our spirit will live on in the hearts, minds and mouth-memories of YOU, the True and Impassioned Ice Cream Fans.

We are proud of the business we built, the mission we embodied and the products and brand we worked so hard to create. We are grateful to our patrons, partners, friends, farmers, cows, cool kids, coconuts and everything and everyone else that participated in this Intrepid Flavor Quest. Thank you for having open minds and mouths, which is all we ever asked for.

Our vision has always been to use Ice Cream as a platform to bring people together, make them happy and encourage them to have a new and different experience. The thought was, if we can get people behind responsibly produced super-premium Ice Cream with stuff like hot sauce in it, that may be a tiny step towards a more peaceful and understanding world. We believe that we succeeded in this effort and have been humbled by the extent to which that vision resonated. We have always intended to use Ice Cream to deliver that special feeling of being at once both confused and grateful, which is more or less how we’re feeling now. So perhaps it worked?

Our shops will be open through Wednesday, November 27th, 2019 or until we run out of Ice Cream, whichever comes first.

The Instagram post closes with details of the deals Little Baby’s is running during its last week: Ice cream scoops are $2, $4, and $6. Shakes and ice cream sandwiches are $7. Bars are $3; CBD bars are $5. Pre-packed pints are $6 and hand-dipped pints are $8. You probably won’t want to wait until Wednesday if you need a last taste of Little Baby’s.
