ROCHESTER After seven years of pouring her heart into unique frozen treats, Bloom'n Cow Ice Cream and Gelato owner Dawn Lewis says it's time for her to "move on."
Lewis said she will close Bloom'n Cow's Rochester location Nov. 30 and Newmarket location Dec. 7 to try something different.
"I just really think it was time for me to take a good, hard look at things and make a decision and move on," Lewis said in a phone interview Wednesday. "It was my dream, I needed to make it happen, I did, and that was the goal."
Lewis opened Bloom'n Cow in Newmarket Aug. 1, 2012, after many happy years in education.
The shop, one of the first tenants in the reborn Newmarket Mills, and its small-batch ice creams quickly became a hit with patrons looking year-round for flavors like Madagascar vanilla bean, coconut stracciatella and gummy bear.
"I get more people when it's cold and snowy than when it's warm and rainy," Lewis said.
Lewis credited her son Nick, a baker, for Bloom'n Cow's signature waffle cones and setting a high standard from day one. Lewis credited her daughter Allison, who named the shop, for her endless support and encouragement.
Lewis opened her Rochester location at The Ridge off Exit 15 of the Spaulding Turnpikein December 2018. Lewis said she ultimately found it "just wasn't the spot for us," but she has no regrets for expanding the business.
"I needed to kind of make a bigger decision for my own personal choices, so that's what I did," Lewis said about the decision to close both shops. "It was a difficult decision to make."
Lewis announced on the Rochester shop's Facebook page last week she was going to close it. She then made a similar announcement on the Newmarket shop's page Monday.
Lewis said each shop had a "really supportive" and regular customer base. She said the Rochester shop's performance didn't necessitate the closure of the Newmarket shop, or vice versa.
"Even if it did, I probably wouldn't say that," she said. "I would rather leave things on a positive note."
Lewis said she'll miss the customers the most, particularly those she's seen grow over the years and make the shop part of their regular traditions.
"I love to make ice cream," Lewis said while thanking the people who have worked with and for her along the way. "I love to make stuff and I'm going to miss making the ice cream and the nondairy products, the experimenting (with different flavors). I'm going to miss a lot of it."
Lewis downplayed the role she's had in Newmarket's downtown revitalization and community feel, stating she's "just the ice cream lady."
Hundreds of Facebook posts and comments, many of which Lewis said brought her to tears, belie that notion.
"My heart broke to read this!!" Jennifer Cash wrote under Lewis' farewell post on the Newmarket shop's page. "The memories and delicious ice cream will never be forgotten...we lived in the mills for five years and having Dawn and her delicious treats three floors down was a luxury not many can be so lucky to have! (I can still smell the brownies baking!) ... you were always so warm and kind to my family and I and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being part of our memories at the mill and of course for grapefruit gelato & banana cookie ice cream!"
Lewis said her story is one of "passion." She saidit's what every small business owner must have to "live and breath" something day in and day out in order to make it successful.
She urged others to use that "fire" to find their calling, acknowledging it's what she plans to do as she figures out the next chapter of her career.
"Like I said, it's a pretty simple story," Lewis said. "Do what you're passionate about. It might take a while, but you'll get there."
