ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- It's the 12th year the masterminds at the Da Vinci Science Center used science to ignite taste buds.
"I love to see the new ideas people come up with, and who doesn't love a sweet treat," said Charlotte Benedix.
Families, like Charlotte's, come and make a tradition out of it. Admission to Da Vinci on the first Saturday of the year comes with a sweet treat and a little friendly competition.
"Ice Cream Wars is Da Vinci Science Center's main event," said Tyler Groft, Museum Education Manager at Da Vinci.
Groft say planning starts in October with hopes thousands of visitors will come to see how nine teams compete to win the trophy.
"A lot of these teams haven't really made ice cream before. They definitely haven't with liquid nitrogen," said Groft.
The teams start with vanillia, cream and sugar as the basic ingredients and leave the rest to their creativity. Add a little bit of liquid nitrogen, cooled to negative 321 degrees Fahrenheit, and voila! Let there be ice cream.
"Banana split. Candy cane, the peppermint ice cream. I like the banana split," said Benedix and family.
"I like the brownie one," said Nolan Meeker.
Our WFMZ team won "Most Unique Topping" with a cookie monster-themed treat called "C is for Cookie."
Representatives with B Braun won the popular vote among all tasters with their Ninja Turtle ice cream.
"You get bragging rights. That's the biggest thing. Teams are always proud of the fact that they won ice cream wars," said Groft.
But the real winners are the ones who learned that science is all around us.
"We try to tell everyone that you are a scientist, even as a visitor, because you're trying things, you're making experiments," said Groft.
The teams provided over 12,500 servings of ice cream at today's event. The Udder Bar on W. Allen Street in Allentown plans to sell the winning flavor for a limited time in March and donate 10% of sales to the Da Vinci Science Center's Science Inquiry Fund.
