Ice Cream Jubilee is Now Serving the Beyond Meat of Ice Cream - Washingtonian
Ice Cream Jubilee is partnering with Eclipse Foods to create dairy-free versions of their bestsellers. Photo courtesy of Ice Cream Jubilee.
Leave the Lactaid at home this weekend because Ice Cream Jubilee is scooping complimentary, dairy-free versions of bestsellers banana bourbon caramel and Thai iced tea. The flavors are made with a vegan base from Eclipse Foods, a Berkley company creating plant-based dairy replacements. Think of it as the Beyond Meat of ice cream. While many vegan ice creams contain common allergens like almonds and soy, Eclipse Foods’ liquid base has no wheat, lactose, soy, nuts, or coconut. Instead, it combines corn, cassava, oil, and potato protein.
The first free tasting takes place February 1 at Ice Cream Jubilee’s Navy Yard location, followed by a February 2 sampling at the Ballston Quarter shop. RSVP to receive your free scoops.
Ice Cream Jubilee already offers dairy-free and sorbet options, but flavors like banana bourbon caramel and Thai iced tea aren’t suited to a sorbet remix, says owner Victoria Lai.
“All of a sudden I started realizing there are a lot of people who will never get to try [these flavors] because maybe they have a dairy allergy,” says Lai. “Sometimes you just want what everybody else is having.”
The flavors need a base that closely replicates dairy, which is Eclipse Foods’ bread and (dairy free) butter. Lai discovered the company while scrolling through Instagram and reached out for a partnership.
Eclipse Foods CEO Aylon Steinhart says the company’s goal is not to create dairy-free alternatives. He wants to craft a perfect replacement, whether you’re lactose intolerant or just looking for a sustainable alternative to traditional dairy. Steinhart draws parallels to Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods, companies aiming to replicate both the taste and texture of meat.
The proof is in the pudding for Lai—or in this case, the ice cream. “I think it’s the way it scoops, it’s the way it melts that is really, really creamy,” she says.
This isn’t Eclipse Foods first foray into the DC market. Last year, plant-powered restaurant Equinox started serving Eclipse Foods ice cream, and chef Todd Gray has whipped the base into crème anglaise and semifreddo.
If you can’t attend the free scoop parties this weekend, Ice Cream Jubilee will continue offering the Eclipse Flavors for the foreseeable future. Although the ice creams are dairy-free and gluten-free, they are produced in facilities that handle nuts, gluten, dairy, soy, and other food allergens. The banana bourbon caramel flavor also contains nuts.

New York’s Van Leeuwen Ice Cream unveils four exotic new flavors - amNY
One of New York’s most posh ice creameries is at it again, creating tantalizing new flavors for adventurous taste buds.
The citywide, artisan Van Leeuwen ice cream scooped out four new flavors for the winter months — two of which are vegan and two that are classics.
Let’s start off with the new classics: marionberry cheesecake and Irish cream.
That cheesecake flavor is a tough one to top.
If you’re unfamiliar with the flavor of marionberries, they’re similar to that of a blackberry; these particular ones come from Stahlbrush berry farms in Oregon.
The jam pairs well with the chunks of graham cracker crust infused into the creamy blend — delightfully tart and sweet.
As for the Irish cream, this mischievous scoop is concocted with Tullamore Dew Irish whiskey along with traces of cocoa, vanilla and other flavorful ingredients that give the Irish cream a mellow, smooth mocha flavor.
Now onto the new vegan options of ginger lemon poppy seed crumble and churros & fudge.
The Ginger Lemon Poppy Seed Crumble is an adventure just with its unique texture. Made from ginger ice cream, this cashew based flavor holds chunks of Van Leeuwen lemon poppy seed cookies with each scoop, providing a tangy taste with a unique texture.
Finally there’s the churros and fudge flavor — and if you didn’t know in advance it was vegan, you’d have difficulty noticing any difference from traditional ice cream.
This one comes from an oat base, which comes across with hints of oatmeal cookie, sweetened with flavorful chunks of churro and complimented by the fudge swirl.
Oat flavors are something that Van Leeuwen intends to continue incorporating into its new flavors and has been since last fall, according to a spokesperson for the flavor experimental ice cream shop.
Something that isn’t new but certainly exciting to watch is how the store makes its own, homemade waffle cones in house.
Staff advises to wait until the waffle batter cooks to a “GBD” standard, known in lay terms as golden, brown, and delicious.
Once springtime rolls around, Van Leeuwen will be re-introducing a special, earth day themed flavor of ice cream as well for its lucky patrons of NYC.
Van Leeuwen operates shops and trucks across the city. Visit their website for more details.

Trump sign puts local ice cream shop in a twist - Fox Business
A New York ice cream shop is embroiled in a swirl of controversy, and this time flavor selection isn't to blame.
Roger's Frigate ice cream shop in Port Jefferson Village is refusing to take down the “In Trump We Trust” banner that rests above the shop after town officials said it violated town code, News12 Long Island reported.
ARBY'S RESTAURANT REMOVES 'INSENSITIVE' SIGN FOLLOWING OUTCRY FROM PARENTS
“It's not necessarily what the sign says,” Port Jefferson Village Mayor Margot Garant told News12. “It's basically the size and substance of the banner itself. It's an illegal sign."
Roger Rutherford, the ice cream shop's manager, told the outlet in an interview this week that George Wallis, the building's owner, put up the banner last Tuesday to support the president during the impeachment trial.
Since then, the shop has spurred quite the not-so-sweet controversy on social media.
Rutherford, Wallis and Garant did not immediately respond to FOX Business' request for comment.

Port Jefferson Village officials said the sign was hung illegally and violates town code because it is too big.
Kathianne Snaden, Port Jefferson Village trustee, told FOX Business that signs are considered illegal if its size is disproportionate to the size of the building on which it is hung.
MUSEUM OF ICE CREAM SCOOPS NYC FLAGSHIP LOCATION, EYES GLOBAL EXPANSION
"Our sign codes are in place in order to promote a uniform standard that is both reasonable and consistent throughout our village," said Snaden. "There are avenues that business owners can take to obtain approval for signs that are non-conforming. To date, the owner of this business has not taken those steps."
If the owner wanted to hang a sign with the exact same message, but on a sign that conforms to the code, it would be approved, Snaden said.
Officials said Wallis had until the end of the day Wednesday to take the sign down or face a fine of up to $2,000 each day the sign remains.
Wallis has been down this road before. In 2017, officials asked him to take down Trump banners because they violated town code, according to the outlet. He reportedly cooperated at the time.
Meanwhile, Rutherford plans to leave the sign in place at this time and believes the demands from the town violate Wallis' free speech, according to News12.
BEN & JERRY'S SWEETENS 'NETFLIX AND CHILL' SCENE WITH ICE CREAM
“This is Wallis' free speech right," Rutherford told the outlet. "I think the village is treading on very thin lines there, forcing Mr. Wallis to take his sign down when he's executing his free speech right."
Town officials tell FOX Business that the sign has not been removed.

Century Park Capital Partners Announces Sale of The Mochi Ice Cream Company - Yahoo Finance
Century Park Capital Partners ("Century Park") is pleased to announce that it has completed the sale of The Mochi Ice Cream Company to Lakeview Capital, Inc.
The Mochi Ice Cream Company is the leading domestic producer of mochi ice cream, the Japanese-inspired handheld ball of premium ice cream enrobed in soft and pillowy mochi dough. The Company’s products are distributed under the My/Mo and Mikawaya brands in grocery, club, and foodservice locations nationally.
The Hashimoto family founded Mikawaya, the predecessor to The Mochi Ice Cream Company, in 1910, and Century Park acquired majority control of the Company in 2015. At the time of acquisition, the Company’s mochi ice cream was primarily sold in niche ethnic grocery stores and certain foodservice channels. Century Park developed a thesis, based on consumer testing and research, that mochi ice cream was a product with potential broad market appeal. In particular, Century Park saw a convergence of trends around increased portion controlled yet indulgent snacking, clean ingredient labels, and growing millennial interest in authentic products. Century Park believed that mochi ice cream could achieve expanded distribution and tremendous growth through increased customer awareness.
Post-acquisition, Century Park brought in a new executive management team, and worked to develop and launch My/Mo, its general market brand, in 2017. Since that time, My/Mo has grown substantially; the Company has successfully launched new flavors, an innovative triple-layer version, a vegan option, seasonal items, and pioneered the My/Mo Mochi Ice Cream BarTM, a self-serve mochi ice cream freezer case. Under Century Park’s ownership, the Company expanded its distribution from fewer than 1,000 niche ethnic and specialty grocery stores to more than 20,000 grocery, club and foodservice locations nationwide.
The investment was led by Martin Sarafa, Managing Partner with Century Park, who commented, "The Mochi Ice Cream Company has become one of the fastest growing branded snacking platforms in the country. The future for mochi ice cream is incredibly bright and we could not be more proud of what this team has accomplished."
Guy Zaczepinski, Managing Partner with Century Park, added, "Craig Berger and his management team did an exceptional job in unlocking the potential that existed within Mikawaya. We are excited for this category, and for the Company’s next chapter."
Craig Berger, CEO of The Mochi Ice Cream Company, commented, "Century Park has been an incredible partner for The Mochi Ice Cream Company. Their strategic vision and operating philosophy plus their outstanding relationship with the senior management team unleashed the tremendous growth of the My/Mo Mochi Ice Cream brand. It has been a great four-plus years and we can’t thank them enough for all of their support. We look forward to carrying the positive momentum into our next phase of growth with Lakeview Capital."
Houlihan Lokey, Inc. served as financial advisor and Winston & Strawn LLP served as legal advisor to The Mochi Ice Cream Company in this transaction.

Internet wonders if Mike Bloomberg knows how to eat ice cream - New York Post
An awkward ice cream tasting video put out by Michael Bloomberg left some critics cold Wednesday.
The campaign clip — posted on Bloomy’s official Twitter account to tout the New York City company Big Gay Ice Cream — shows the Democratic presidential hopeful stiffly nibbling a scoop of the frozen treat before offering up a joyless, “Mmmmh.”
The clip is likely part of the former New York mayor’s push to highlight his support of LGBTQ groups — but it left the internet wondering if the billionaire actually knows how to eat ice cream.
“Im 100% certain Bloomberg is a robot. Who scoops ice cream like that??” one Twitter user wrote.
Another observer teased, “Bloomberg doing his best to prove he’s a good non-human billionaire” while another bashed, “So cringeworthy.”
“Does Michael Bloomberg Know How to Eat Ice Cream?” a Vice food writer wondered, before adding, “We’re not so sure.”
The video, titled “Mike Love[s] Big Gay Ice Cream” was posted Tuesday night along with a rainbow flag emoji.
In it, Bloomberg asks “Where is my ice cream?” and is handed a pint, which he apathetically stabs with a spoon.
He then takes a tiny bite of the melted dessert, holds up the pint and robotically proclaims, “Big Gay Ice Cream is the best.”
Bloomberg surged to fourth place nationally Tuesday, knocking Pete Buttigieg out of the pack, according to a new poll.

Mike Bloomberg takes scoop of 'Big Gay Ice Cream' in latest campaign ad - Washington Examiner
Michael Bloomberg's 2020 campaign released a 10-second ad in which the former New York City mayor declared, "Big Gay Ice Cream is the best!"
"Where's my ice cream? Ah, thank you," Bloomberg said in the ad, which was shared on Twitter Tuesday night.
After a staffer handed him a carton of ice cream, the 2020 Democrat said, "Mmmh, Big Gay Ice Cream is the best!"
Bloomberg's social media team has a history of attempting to use humor to rally voters. During the seventh Democratic debate in Iowa, which Bloomberg missed after failing to qualify for the individual donor threshold, his staff posted an image of the candidate's face edited onto a meatball and another showing him with batteries in his mouth.
The New York Democrat has prioritized winning key states after the first four early primaries and has risen sharply in recent polling, surging to more than 8% in the RealClearPolitics national average, while being bolstered by a $200 million advertisement blitz over the last several months.

The History of Leopold's: a legacy built by ice cream - WTOC
“When my dad came here as a youngster, he and my Uncle George who is[sic] sort of a surrogate father to him...they initially went to Brazil, Indiana where they had a relative there," said Stratton Leopold. Leopold now leads the store now as the senior ice cream scooper. "The relative was in the candy and ice cream business and that’s where they fell in love with this business. My dad, when he first came back from the first world war, they wanted to open an ice cream business. And they found a business on the corner of Gwinnett and Habersham. Through research, I found they didn’t buy the building initially. They bought the business in 1919. They then opened the business and started making ice cream, small amounts at first and after a few years saved money to buy the building and continue. We lived upstairs over the store, that’s where I grew up.”

The $20 Luxury Face Cream - The New York Times
Remember the heyday of high-end miracle moisturizers? Creams could promise beautiful skin via proprietary elixirs and secret blends. For a long time, luxury skin care put a big price tag on mystery — ingredients that spurred hope and wonder in a pretty jar.
Well, the meaning of luxury is broader now. Products are changing because we have changed.
Victoria Fu and Gloria Lu used to be product formulators for big beauty conglomerates. In 2017, they founded Chemist Confessions, a blog and now a podcast sharing their insider view on the industry, with a focus on how ingredients work.
“We want people to think about those fancy extracts,” Ms. Lu said. “Brands don’t have to tell you how much of them is in a product, and some companies abuse that.”
Chemist Confessions and its much more contentious counterpart, the Instagram account Estée Laundry, which is known for calling out brands on dubious claims and environmental carelessness, have increased the beauty enthusiast’s understanding of the industry. And that, in turn, has increased the value consumers place on brand transparency.
“There’s still a lot of misrepresentation out there,” Ms. Lu said. “But people are looking for a deeper understanding of their products and how they work for them, personally.”
Whether the new luxury is characterized by rigorous efficacy, transparency when it comes to ingredients and environmental impact, or a cute social-media-friendly aesthetic, it is about choice. It is about consumers making those choices based on their own values.
And, what’s more, it needn’t be expensive.
The Inkey List Tranexamic Acid Hyperpigmentation Treatment
The Inkey List, a company in Britain, makes trying out trending ingredients accessible. Tranexamic acid has long been used to promote blood clotting and has only recently bubbled up as a topical treatment for hyperpigmentation.
The Inkey List version is $14.99; other formulas featuring the acid can cost as much as $100. “I love the idea of taking something that’s new and only really available at the high-end, then offering it quicker than anyone else to the masses,” said Mark Curry, a founder of Inkey List.
Graffiti Collective Mixtape Mask Set
This mask set makes masking fun and customizable. Each color is a different formula — blue exfoliates, pink soothes irritation, gold hydrates and green deep cleans — so you can, say, treat an oily T zone while moisturizing drier areas. The masks, $20 for four, go on bright and opaque, and they are selfie-perfect.
Face Rx Skin Regeneration Treatment
Prescription-strength retinoids are still the gold standard in at-home treatment to boost cell turnover, which reduces fine lines. Yet because of their high cost, along with requiring a visit to the doctor, they’re inaccessible for many of us.
Face Rx makes the process easier. You meet with a doctor online, then receive a retinoid at a strength that suits your needs. The initial setup will cost $102, but after that, refills are $82.
Versed Vacation Eyes Brightening Eye Gel
The vitamin C and niacinamide in this eye gel, $17.99, are known skin lighteners that help reduce excess under-eye pigment. Ginseng root extract, which can help treat photo-aging rounds out the active ingredients. The well-designed collection is worthy of a bathroom shelfie, but you can find it at your local Target.
Cocokind Golden Elixir
Face oils often reach cult-favorite status, and with that cachet comes stubbornly expensive pricing. Cocokind Golden Elixir, at $25 for four ounces, is a multipurpose organic oil for all skin types. The main ingredient, plukenetia volubilis seed oil, is high in antioxidants and fatty acid, which aid in skin barrier repair and reduce inflammation.
Kinship Super Mello and Insta Swipe
Kinship, a company with a Gen Z focus, combines care for skin and care for the planet. Alpha hydroxy acid powers the Insta Swipe peel pads, $22, which are compostable and biodegradable.
The pads and Super Mello, a vanilla-scented moisturizer, $22, are packaged in recycled plastic jars. Half of that plastic comes from oceans; it’s recycled trash collected by fishermen in waters around Indonesia. You can scan a QR code on the bottom of each jar to find out the plastic’s precise origin.
Beauty Pie Jeju AM/PM Moisture Superinfusion
Industry watchdogs like Estée Laundry have alerted us to the high markups (your $150 serum may have cost $20 to make), and this knowledge is foundational to Beauty Pie, which is based on a membership structure.
For a monthly fee ($10 to $30, depending on how much you want to buy each month), you get to shop for cleverly formulated, prettily packaged skin care (and makeup too) at drugstore prices. The Jeju moisturizer, $9.52 (member price), delivers hydration without excessive shine thanks to oil-absorbing volcanic micro-sand from Jeju, an island off mainland Korea.
Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask
This translucent hybrid gel-cream, $22 for 30 milliliters, is a sleeping mask, which amounts to a moisturizer used as nighttime skin care. Some of its appeal is sensory — the watermelon scent is delightful as is its cool gel texture — but you will wake up with hydrated skin because of its hyaluronic acid and glycerin.
Chemist Confessions Aquafix
In 2018, Chemist Confessions introduced a collection of skin-care basics: hydrators, an exfoliator, a cleanser and an oil. You won’t find any hot new extracts in their formulations, just time-tested ingredients at high concentrations. And the percentage of each of the actives is listed on the packaging. Aquafix, $35, contains glycerin and provitamin B5, a skin soother and humectant.
The Ordinary Buffet and EUK 134 0.1%
Beauty buffs get an undeniable feeling of delight from finding, trying and witnessing the effect of a new product with cool ingredients. The Ordinary delivers that hit with inexpensive products that have a generically clinical feel.
Buffet, $14.80, is one of its staples, a serum with peptides, antioxidants and amino acids that even out skin tone and hydrate the skin. EUK 134 0.1%, $8.80, is made with just one active ingredient: a potent, and virtually unknown, antioxidant (ethylbisiminomethylguaiacol manganese chloride). Dermatologists caution against fawning over the next big thing, but with the Ordinary’s low prices, it’s hard to suppress the urge to try it.

They've got the scoop: Couple purchases iconic ice cream parlor - Peninsula Daily News
PORT TOWNSEND — Julie McCulloch is enjoying a little more ice cream than usual as, she said recently, the end of an era nears.
Julie and her husband, David, married for 45 years and owners of Elevated Ice Cream for 42 of those, have begun the process of retirement, selling their business to a couple they call their ideal buyers.
Shirlena Freund and her husband, Josh, who spent some of his boyhood in Port Townsend, are the people taking custody of the Swiss orange chocolate chip, the espresso chip, the mint chip, the cardamom and all of those house-made ice creams.
Learned of opportunity
Back in spring 2018, they’d heard Elevated was for sale. The couple was living in Snohomish County with their eight — yes, eight — children, where Josh has had a long career at Microsoft.
Suddenly, last summer, Shirlena was in Port Townsend with her daughters. As it has for untold thousands of visitors, that day included ice cream at Elevated, the shop inside an 1860s-vintage building at 631 Water St.
“We’d thought it would have sold by then,” she recalled.
Shirlena and Josh had considered buying another small business, a Snohomish bed-and-breakfast. But that didn’t turn out to be right for them.
At the same time, the Freunds were fearful about Josh leaving his corporate job. It would be a huge step.
Yet, “let’s just call and see,” Shirlena said.
They contacted Windermere Real Estate, the listing company where the Elevated package — ice cream parlor, candy shop, vacation rental upstairs and the building itself — was priced at $1.8 million. They got more information. They wrote letters to the McCullochs about why they wanted this, of all things.
“We are small-town,” Shirlena said.
She and Josh met in high school in Friday Harbor; both have dreamed of operating a family-owned, family-friendly business in a place like Port Townsend. They have immediate family nearby in Clallam and Jefferson counties.
And it doesn’t get much more romantic than this: When the couple — now married nearly 25 years — were teenagers, they came to Elevated on a date.
It was a match. Following a labyrinthine process, the Freunds got a Small Business Administration loan; an offer was made in August. As they finalize the transfer of ownership this month, they declined to give the purchase price but said a lower amount than the $1.8 million asking price was negotiated.
After a couple of decades at Microsoft, Josh was acutely ready to do something different, while he and Shirlena have no illusions.
“We choose to do hard things,” he said, including adopting two of their children from foster care. Their four sons and four daughters are ages 2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 13, 16 and 19.
Over the next several weeks, Shirlena and Josh, who are in their mid-40s, will learn all they can from Julie, 66, and David, 67.
The new owners emphasize they will not alter the shop’s staff, products or recipes for Italian ices, traditional American ice cream and confections.
They will have help from a close consultant: their 19-year-old son Simeon, a business student at Northwest University in Kirkland. He’ll be offering suggestions for marketing, for instance. His younger brother Malachi, 16, is ready to start dishing up the flavors at Elevated.
Operating this company is not all strawberry sundaes. Elevated is open seven days, or as Julie puts it, 84 hours per week. Winter payroll is 16 employees. Summer brings that to 25.
The McCullochs don’t have kids of their own, but David said they’ve had hundreds on their hard-scooping staff.
“Our business grew with Port Townsend,” he added.
In 1977, he and Julie began selling cones from an elevator cage in the alley behind what is now Pippa’s Real Tea.
People stood in line — in all weather — until they moved into the current building, a former blacksmith and wagon shop.
Back then the Washington State Ferry docked right outside, and customers would rush in and out en route to the boat. When the ferry moved down to its current landing site, things changed for the better. More people lingered to enjoy their treats. Elevated grew even more popular as people of all ages came in droves, morning, noon and night.
It’s about the ice cream, yes, but it’s also about having a place to come after a party, or just before leaving town, or to sweeten a difficult talk with a loved one.
“This is a gathering place where everyone is welcome,” Julie said.
The McCullochs continued to make their own ice cream — on demand — six days a week in summertime.
“We have a well-oiled staff,” said David, adding that Julie, with her sharp sense of good character, hired them.
Over the past year, hundreds of people have asked the McCullochs about Elevated’s fate. They happily report finding the Freunds. As for Julie and David, Port Townsend is home and where they will stay.
Shirlena and Josh, David added, have “the people skills to take this forward.”

Harvey Weinstein, gal pal reportedly binged on ice cream amid marijuana fumes at NJ hotel - Page Six
Harvey Weinstein holed himself up in a New Jersey hotel with a 30-year-old gal pal — with the pair chowing down on ice cream amid marijuana fumes — before the start of his Manhattan sex-crimes trial, a new report says.
The fallen movie mogul and accused rapist was with actress Alexandra Vino when the pair “stunk up their no-smoking room with marijuana, then ordered ‘several ice creams’ from room service, and were require to pay extra to cover room damage when they checked out,” The Hollywood Reporter said, quoting a source at the Molly Pitcher Inn in Red Bank.
The alleged incident occurred in late December, before Weinstein’s trial started earlier this month.
The New Jersey-born Vino is the same woman who sat on Weinstein’s lap as she serenaded the crowd at Cipriani’s upstairs lounge Socialista in Manhattan in November.
A Weinstein rep responded to the Hollywood Reporter, “The concierge assistant that set up his itinerary, to date, has not received any notifications, or billing, for any extra charges indicating the room Mr. Weinstein stayed in was damaged.
“And under no circumstances was Mr. Weinstein smoking marijuana. Relapsing, he did, however, smoke a couple of cigarettes, and once notified that he was not staying in a smoking room, he stopped smoking immediately.”
The spokesman added that the disgraced Hollywood producer did have “two ice cream sundaes, alone at the bar, and ordered room service for himself” and said, “The next day, Miss Vino brought a male friend by the Inn to meet Mr. Weinstein.
“There is nothing romantic about their platonic relationship. If there are any damages due to his smoking habit, he will pay all costs.”

Incyte Announces that the TRuE-AD2 Pivotal Trial of Ruxolitinib Cream Met its Primary Endpoint in Patients with Atopic Dermatitis - Yahoo Finance
Incyte (Nasdaq:INCY) today announced positive topline results from its randomized, vehicle-controlled, pivotal Phase 3 TRuE-AD2 study evaluating the safety and efficacy of ruxolitinib cream in adolescent and adult patients (age ≥ 12 years) with atopic dermatitis (AD).
The study, part of the TRuE-AD clinical trial program, met its primary endpoint. Significantly more patients treated with ruxolitinib cream 0.75% and 1.5% achieved Investigator’s Global Assessment Treatment Success (IGA-TS) – defined as an IGA score of 0 (clear) or 1 (almost clear) with at least a two-point improvement from baseline at Week 8 – than patients treated with vehicle control (non-medicated cream). The overall efficacy and safety profile of ruxolitinib cream is consistent with previous data, and no new safety signals were observed. The long-term safety portion of the study will continue as planned.
"This positive topline result reinforces the potential of ruxolitinib cream, if approved, to offer AD patients a much-needed effective, non-steroidal therapy," said Jim Lee, M.D., Group Vice President, Inflammation & AutoImmunity, Incyte. "We look forward to the results of the TRuE-AD1 trial, the second study in the pivotal clinical trial program, later this quarter, and to sharing these data with the medical community as part of our commitment to develop a new first-line treatment option for these patients."
Data from TRuE-AD2 will be submitted for presentation at an upcoming scientific meeting.
AD is a common chronic disease characterized by inflammation of the skin. At least 11 million people in the United States have been diagnosed with and are being treated for AD. The majority of these patients have a mild or moderate form of the disease and approximately 80% are adults or adolescents. Signs and symptoms of AD include irritated and itchy skin that can cause red lesions that may ooze and crust. Patients with AD are also more susceptible to bacterial, viral and fungal infections.
About TRuE-AD2
TRuE-AD2 (NCT03745651) is an Incyte-sponsored randomized, double-blind, vehicle-controlled Phase 3 study evaluating the safety and efficacy of ruxolitinib cream compared to vehicle (non-medicated cream) in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD). The study enrolled over 600 patients (age ≥ 12 years) diagnosed with AD for at least two years and who are candidates for topical therapy.
Patients with an Investigator’s Global Assessment (IGA) score of 2 to 3 (a measure of disease severity), and with AD involving between 3% to 20% of their Body Surface Area (BSA) (excluding scalp) were randomized 2:2:1 into one of three treatment arms for eight weeks, including: ruxolitinib cream 0.75% administered twice daily (BID); ruxolitinib cream 1.5% BID; and vehicle (non-medicated cream). Participants who successfully completed an assessment at Week 8 were offered participation in the 44-week long-term safety treatment extension period with ruxolitinib cream 0.75% or 1.5% BID.
The primary endpoint of TRuE-AD2 is the proportion of participants achieving an Investigator’s Global Assessment Treatment Success (IGA-TS), defined as an IGA score of 0 (clear) or 1 (almost clear) with at least a two-point improvement from baseline at Week 8. Other key secondary endpoints include: the proportion of patients achieving at least a 75% improvement from baseline in the Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI) score – another measurement of disease extent and severity – or EASI75, and the proportion of participants with at least a four-point improvement in the itch numerical rating scale (NRS). The study is also tracking the frequency, duration and severity of adverse events associated with the use of ruxolitinib cream.
For more information about the study, please visit http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT03745651.
About TRuE-AD
