Gofer Ice Cream reopens satellite shop in Greenwich after fire - Greenwich Time

GREENWICH — After a fire at one of its Greenwich locations earlier this week, Gofer Ice Cream has reopened its seasonal satellite shop up the street.

A building fire late Monday damaged the original Gofer shop at 522 E. Putnam Ave. In response, the owners on Saturday opened their location at 551 E. Putnam Ave. near River Road in Cos Cob.

“We were fortunate to be able to respond quickly to still be able to serve the community while the weather is still agreeable.” said Jay Ragusa, Gofer Ice Cream’s founder. “We do plan on rebuilding our Greenwich shop, if it all works out. We did sustain significant smoke damage, however, meaning a full rebuild is required.

“Reopening the seasonal shop will not only allow the business to continue, it allows for jobs for all of the crew that count on Gofer being there,” Ragusa said.

Many of the windows at Indian Field Plaza remain boarded up with plywood since the fire late Monday night. A dozen businesses and offices were closed by the blaze and accompanying smoke damage, including Gofer and the popular Pizza Post. The shopping center also houses La Bella Day Spa, Salon Moda Enzo, a tutoring business and other small offices.

The Greenwich fire marshal has not released a cause of the blaze.

Matt Criscuolo, co-owner of the Pizza Post, said it was unclear when the pies would again be sliding out of the oven at his shop.

The fire was still a horrible memory, Crisculo said: “I’ve never dealt with anything like this before, it’s devastating.”

Still, Criscuolo emphasized, the business would come back, and he was appreciative of the kind words of encouragement he has been receiving — “such an amazing fan base,” he said.

“Pizza Post has been part of the town for 47 years, and we’re not going anywhere,” the business owner said. “We will be back up and running at some time, because someone’s got to make the best pizza in town.”

The fire broke out at about 11 p.m. Monday, tearing through the two-story commercial building with flames shooting out of the roof. It took 50 to 60 Greenwich firefighters about 35 minutes to get the blaze under control, Deputy Fire Chief Brian Koczak said.

“There was heavy damage to the first and second floors and smoke damage to the entire building,” he said.

Firefighters were alerted to the blaze by a police officer on patrol who saw smoke coming from the building.

No one was inside the building when firefighters arrived, and no civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.

The Gofer Ice Cream shop in Greenwich was the first for the local company. Ragusa said he first conceived of the concept in 1998 while he was in business school. In 2003, the Ragusa family found and built in their “ideal location” in Indian Field Plaza.

The shop has been open almost every day since, with Gofer serving the Fairfield County community for over 17 seasons with shops in Stamford, Wilton and Darien.
